Salute to fighter of scourges

Respiratory specialist Zhong Nanshan is to be awarded an honorary doctoral degree by Lingnan University to mark the mainland expert's efforts to battle scourges.

The 85-year-old professor stood up to steer efforts to control the spread of SARS in 2003 and Covid-19 in 2019, the university noted.

Zhong has made other significant contributions to medicine, technology and education, the university added. He has published more than 50 papers in international academic journals and over 200 in national journals, written 16 books and taken out nine patents.

No surprise, then, that Zhong has already received more than 20 science and technology awards.

Lingnan is also handing out three honorary doctorates for contributions to society to Norman Chan Tak-lam, retiring chief of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, Taiwan film director Sylvia Chang Ai-chia, and American political science scholar Deane Neubauer.
