Lingnan creates special air purifiers

Some 400 households living in subdivided flats in Sham Shui Po received energy-efficient air purifiers developed by Lingnan University.

The Sham Shui Po District Office donated the air purifiers via the Sham Shui Po community living room and another soon-to-open community living room operated by St James' Settlement, to families living in subdivided flats where PM 2.5 concentrations are higher due to poor ventilation.

To alleviate poverty, the SSPDO is using local technologies to serve the community. The new-model air purifier is less than 20 centimeters in length, width, and height, and weighs only about 500 grams, with a design of a small fan, two filter papers, and a recyclable plastic casing.

Lingnan University professor Albert Ko Wing-yin, pictured, said the device is energy-efficient and free of special maintenance and can be recharged using a standard power bank.

The air purifier costs around HK$150, and is recommended to replace the filter papers every six months, costing around HK$30.
