A tiny cha chaan teng in Yuen Long is struggling to cope with a sudden rush of customers after a viral social media post hailed its meat patty rice as “the best in Asia.” While diners queue in the rain, the restaurant’s owner says the hype has brought stress rather than celebration.

Owner Ben said the unexpected crowds left him anxious. “My staff are exhausted, and customers have to wait half an hour to get in and another half hour for food,” he said, adding that the small shop often ran out of cooked rice due to the surge.

“Such a small shop can’t handle this kind of volume. Doing business isn’t just about making money — it’s about serving the neighborhood.”

Viral Threads Post: The Reason Behind the Rush

The surge was traced to a viral post praising the dish as “a master craftsman’s creation” and “a flavor bomb,” prompting long queues outside Da Bo Bing Sat.

On Wednesday (Dec 10), a reporter from Sing Tao witnessed diners lined up in the drizzle, stretching across five or six shopfronts, with all 10 tables fully occupied. Many young customers said they came specifically after seeing the viral Threads post, including some from Kowloon.

Neighbors said the queues only appeared in the past two weeks. One staff member, who has worked in the area for over a decade, said she had “never seen anything like this,” adding that the restaurant’s staff were overwhelmed.

The reporter, who waited 45 minutes for a seat, said the HK$54 meat patty rice arrived sizzling within eight minutes. The patty was crispy on the outside, tender inside, and infused with the aroma of dried squid, served with soy sauce and vegetables.

Ben said he only learned about the viral post when his daughter showed it to him during last weekend’s business surge. Despite the popularity, he hopes the hype will fade, allowing the eatery to continue serving loyal customers without compromising quality.
