A 51-year-old worker was seriously injured after falling approximately 8 meters at the Shek Kwu Chau artificial island construction site on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 3 pm when the worker, surnamed Ng, was painting on the fifth floor. The fireproof gypsum board beneath him suddenly cracked, causing him to fall through the opening to the third floor below.
The Government Flying Service transported the conscious worker to Eastern District Hospital via helicopter. Preliminary reports indicate he sustained multiple fractures.
The Environmental Protection Department expressed deep concern over the industrial accident and has required the contractor to submit an incident report within seven days. The department has also notified the Labour Department and police while providing assistance to the injured worker's family.
The injured man was employed by a subcontractor working on the waste-to-energy facility project at the artificial island. The EPA emphasized its consistent focus on construction site safety and monitoring of contractor operations.
