Inmate convicted of drug trafficking found unconscious and dies in hospital

A 56-year-old male inmate was found unconscious at Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre and later died on Saturday after he was sent to hospital. 

The man suffered from hypertension, neurosyphilis and meningitis, and required continuous medical care and follow-up at the institution hospital and public hospital. 

At 1.23 am today, he was found unconscious in his bed in the institution hospital by a correctional officer. The officer immediately provided first-aid treatment and called for reinforcement and an ambulance to send him to a public hospital for further rescue. 

His condition deteriorated and he was certified dead at 2.43 am today. 

The case has been reported to the Police. A death inquest will be held by the Coroner’s Court. 

The man in custody was sentenced to imprisonment for the offense of trafficking in a dangerous drug in November 2018.
