Molly, the oldest male Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin at Hong Kong's Ocean Park, has died at the age of 40, park officials announced on Friday.
According to a park statement, the dolphin became weak on New Year's Eve and died on Thursday.
The park recognizes Molly’s service, adding that the mammal was not just an attraction, but a vital link connecting humans and marine life, fostering education and awareness about the importance of marine conservation.
It said a necropsy is currently in progress to ascertain the precise cause behind Molly’s death.
Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins, when reaching the age of 40, are considered senior, said the park.
“The findings from the autopsy could provide critical insights into the health concerns of older marine mammals and aid future conservation efforts,” it said.
