Suspect arrested after attempted mugging of elderly man in Tuen Mun

A lone robber was arrested after he attempted to mug a 74-year-old man who withdrew HK$14,000 in cash in Tuen Mun on Tuesday.

Police received a report around 3 pm yesterday, where the incident occurred on a pedestrian path near a private residential estate on Wu Chui Road.

Officers said the 55-year-old suspect had tailed the elder from the bank at Tuen Mun Town Plaza, a distance of about three kilometers, for approximately one hour before assaulting him.

The 74-year-old suffered injuries to his head as he was shoved to the ground. The suspect fled the scene after failing to snatch the cash. 

The robber was arrested after a five-hour investigation and was detained on charges of attempted robbery and assault.

The case will be further investigated by the Operation Support Unit of the Tuen Mun Police District.

Police remind the public, especially the elderly who tend to withdraw large sums of cash for the Lunar New Year celebrations, to remain vigilant when carrying valuable items or large amounts of cash.
