The Security Bureau said 600 independent tourists will be allowed to visit Sha Tau Kok per day starting in April, while no quota limit will be set for tour groups on weekdays.
The second phase of opening up the Sha Tau Kok border region was implemented on January 1. Currently, only 700 organized tour groups and 300 independent travelers per day can visit most of the region.
To facilitate the public experience of Sha Tau Kok, the Bureau announced that the quota of independent travelers would be doubled to 600. In addition, the limitation for organized tour groups has also been removed for weekdays, allowing groups to apply for tourism permits directly without applying for quotas in advance.
The Bureau said interested citizens could apply for tourism permits via the Police online platform on a first-come, first-served basis starting on Monday (Mar 25) at 10 am.
If citizens plan to visit the Hong Kong Geopark and Sha Tau Kok on the same day, they could apply for the permits before taking kaitos from the outlying islands to Sha Tau Kok, which would make it easier and more convenient to visit the border area in the future.
