EOC throws weight behind Gay Games

The Equal Opportunities Commission supports all events that foster diversity and harmony - including the ongoing Gay Games - despite criticism of the event, according to chairman Ricky Chu Man-kin.

The 11th Gay Games kicked off at Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wan Chai on Saturday in a first for Asia, despite opposition from anti-LGBTQ Legislative Council members.

Chu believes the government also supports diversity and integration, including the rights of sexual minorities.

His comments came as the Games entered its second day, one day after Executive Council convener Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee received a hero's welcome at its opening.

"We are proud the organizers overcame difficulties to hold the event. History is being created today," Ip said in an opening speech, bringing many shouts of "Thank you, Ip!"

Chu said the EOC's anti-discrimination work for sexual minorities would only focus on issues affecting individuals, such as employment, education and the provision of goods or services.

He believes a recent court ruling about same-sex marriages is outside the EOC's scope and that the government is working on action on the judgment.

The nine-day games will end on November 11 with a variety of sports, including aquatics, athletics, ball games, racquet sports and mahjong.

The games are being held at different venues, including the University of Hong Kong's Stanley Ho Sports Complex in Pok Fu Lam and the Hong Kong Football Association's training center in Tseung Kwan O.

The event may have fewer participants than expected, but it is regarded as an achievement for the Games to be held in Hong Kong 40 years after its establishment.
