Over 200 CUHK scientists named among world's best

Over 200 scholars of the Chinese University of Hong Kong are among the top 2 percent of scientists around the world, including the administration's health advisor David Hui Shu-cheong, the university announced yesterday.

Among them, 22 CUHK scholars were named the top 100 scientists in their respective academic areas, according to a global list compiled by Stanford University.

According to the list of leading scientists released early this month, a total of 210 CUHK academics have been listed among the world's top two percent of scientists this year.

Hui, a respiratory expert at Chinese University, ranked 89th in the field of respiratory systems.

Rossa Chiu Wai-kwun was ranked 54th in the field of general clinical medicine.

Leung Ping-chung, director at the university's Centre for Clinical Trials on Chinese Medicine of the Institute of Chinese Medicine, ranked 65th in the field of medicinal and biomolecular chemistry.

"The result reflects that research at the university not only maintains a world-class level but also gains international recognition," CUHK said.

The scholars are in a database of more than 100,000 top scientists across the world on the basis of standardized citation indicators, which was created by a research team led by Stanford University professor John Ioannidis, CUHK said. "They were grouped into 22 subject fields and 174 sub-fields using the indicators," it said.

"The indicators included information on citations, an individual's scientific research output, co-authorship and a composite indicator for career-long citation impact up to the end of 2022."

The Hong Kong Baptist University also announced on Tuesday that 52 of its scholars are ranked as the world's top 2 percent most-cited scientists on the Stanford University list this year.

"The growing presence of HKBU scholars on this internationally recognized list is a strong testament to the University's expanding research strength and impact," the university said while congratulating its "top-notch researchers."

Earlier this month, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University's Faculty of Humanities announced its associate dean Hu Guangwei is one of the top 50 scholars worldwide in the field of languages and linguistics.

Fifteen Lingnan University scholars are also included in the world's top 2 percent of scientists this year.
