Reputation rankings slide continues for HKU

University of Hong Kong has dropped in the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings for the third year in a row, while Harvard University tops the rankings for the 13th consecutive year.

The reputation rankings are distinct from the overall World University Rankings by Times Higher Education, as universities are assessed based on the views of published academics.

More than 38,000 academics from 166 countries were asked to name the best 15 universities in both research and teaching in their field, with the top 200 ranked.

Six American universities - Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, University of California, Berkeley, Princeton and Yale - made it to the top 10.

The University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, ranked third and fourth, Tsinghua University in Beijing moved up one place to eighth, and University of Tokyo came in 10th.

Peking University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University were ranked 11th and 43rd, respectively.

Compared to the rankings of 2022, the number of Chinese universities in the top 50 has decreased by one. Fudan University, which was ranked 39th in 2022, dropped to the 51-60 range.

Among Hong Kong institutions, HKU, Polytechnic University and City University fell in the rankings.

From 48th in 2021, HKU dropped to the 51-60 range in 2022, and further down to the 61-70 range in the latest announcement.

The rankings for PolyU and CityU slumped from 2022's 126-150 range and 151-175 range, respectively, to the current 176-200 range.

But the rankings of two local universities, Chinese University and the University of Science and Technology, remained in the 91-100 range.

National Taiwan University dropped for the third straight year and ranked in the 126-150 range last year.

National University of Singapore stayed in 19th place, while Nanyang Technological University improved from 40th in 2022 to 36th last year.
