Integrating AI, Data Science, IoT and Metaverse for Integrated STEAM Education and Meta-Commerce

Integrating AI, Data Science, IoT, and Metaverse is the next generation of internet for meta-learning, social and commercial activities. Since 2022, HKU SAAS Data Science Lab (SAAS DSL) collaborated with Marvel Digital Ai Limited in an “AI in metaverse project”, and developed an AI app for emotion detection via text, speech, and video for improving human-like communication in the metaverse of HKU Campusland. In 2023, HKU SAAS DSL built the 11 schools, and developed the exhibition rooms, AI chatbot, 3D visualization, mixed reality learning content with the schools’ teachers and students, and the 100 undergraduate students in worldwide university in “We together in metaverse” project for integrated STEAM education.  The meta-innovation school campus at HKU Campusland was opened on Oct 6, 2023.

In 2024, the emotional AI chatbot will further be developed for customer enquiry, virtual internship, and virtual entrepreneurship to nurture students on commercial knowledge, innovation, applied learning, and business communications in the “We innovate together in metaverse project”.  SAAS DSL will teach students to use HKU SAAS DSL’s AI, data science and IoT apps for emotion detection, social media/big data analysis, and mixed reality analysis, and deploy them to build a meta-commerce environment for meta-integrated STEAM education and meta-business model.”, said Dr Adela Lau, Deputy Director of HKU SAAS Data Science Lab.   Currently, 11 companies from local and overseas (HK, Singapore, UK, Ireland, USA, South Africa) participated in this project, and will offer virtual entrepreneurship and virtual interns to local and worldwide students.  More AI chatbots and the integrated STEAM learning courses will be implemented in this project with the companies and schools.   “The project aims to foster students' application of STEAM theories in practical settings, enhance their understanding of the diverse nature of industries, develop metaverse business models, and promote digital economy and innovation on a global scale.”, said Dr Eddy Lam, Associate Head of HKU SAAS and Associate Dean of Faculty of Science.  “All companies and schools in local and overseas are welcome to participate in the “We innovation together in metaverse project” with HKU SAAS DSL to build their schools, business models, and metaverse buildings in HKU Campusland together.”, said Dr Adela Lau.
