81-year-old taxi driver arrested after wrong-way driving on West Kowloon Corridor

An 81-year-old taxi driver has been arrested after footage on social media showed his cab driving the wrong way on West Kowloon Corridor in the early hours of Monday.

The Kowloon West traffic unit's task force launched an investigation after the video emerged, showing the taxi heading against traffic near the Kowloon Funeral Home around 4am. The driver was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of dangerous driving.

He has been released on bail and must report to police in early February. No one was injured. The taxi was impounded at Kowloon Bay Vehicle Detention Centre for inspection.

Police stressed they actively gather information from various sources, including online patrols, to crack down on traffic offences that endanger road safety.

Dangerous driving carries a maximum penalty of a HK$25,000 fine and three years in jail, with a mandatory driving disqualification of at least six months for first-time convictions.
