The redeveloped Huanggang Port will open next Monday, with an opening ceremony scheduled for the day before, according to sources.
This came as the taxi industry told Sing Tao Daily, the sister publication of The Standard, that authorities have notified the trade to send taxis to stand by for passengers at the new port that morning.
Sources said the pickup and drop-off area will follow an arrangement similar to the airport's, with a transportation buffer zone expected to hold 70 New Territories taxis and 30 urban taxis.
In an earlier announcement, the Immigration Department said eligible Hong Kong residents can register through the "HK e-Channel" app to use co-location self-service kiosks and contactless, face-scan clearance.
On-site enrollment at e-Channel counters or self-service kiosks at the Huanggang Port is also available, allowing residents aged 18 or older to complete immigration procedures for both sides at once during their first use.
Sources said next Monday’s opening date was chosen after careful consideration, specifically avoiding the National Day Golden Week travel peak because staff on both sides may not yet be fully familiar with the "co-location" procedures.
The quieter Monday is also expected to ease pressure on personnel, giving them low-traffic days to adjust to the new arrangements.
Meanwhile, Guangdong Party Secretary Huang Kunming traveled to Shenzhen today to inspect the new hub, with local media confirming that an opening is imminent.
Huang reportedly greeted customs and border inspection staff, noting that Huanggang is a key hub for Shenzhen-Hong Kong and Guangdong-Hong Kong travel, playing a vital role in the Greater Bay Area's connectivity.
