Hong Kong’s under-22 basketball team closed out their 15th National Games campaign on a high note Tuesday night, edging Fujian 109-105 in front of a roaring home crowd at Hong Kong Coliseum to clinch ninth place in the men’s competition.
Playing in the ninth-to-eleventh classification round-robin, Hong Kong carried forward their earlier group-stage victory over Sichuan, meaning a win against Fujian would seal ninth spot.
The hosts rode the energy of the packed Hong Kong Coliseum to a 51-46 halftime lead, then weathered a Fujian fightback that briefly put the visitors ahead in the second half.
With the game on a knife-edge, guard Chung Chi-wing drained a crucial three-pointer to regain the lead before icing the victory with three clutch free throws inside the final 24 seconds, holding off Fujian’s late charge to secure the four-point margin.
Sharpshooter Ng Wai-tsun poured in a game-high 33 points, while captain Ivan Yang stuffed the stat sheet with 32 points and a mammoth 21 rebounds. Chung added 24 points and 11 assists to power Hong Kong to a memorable finish on home soil.
