A 24-year-old triad member and a 22-year-old woman were arrested after the corpses of two baby boys were found in two glass jars in a flat of a Tuen Mun building on Friday morning.
Briefing the case in the early hours of Saturday, police said the two arrestees were the parents of the two deceased babies and were arrested for illegal handling of corpses. Police have laid a holding charge against them as well.
It is understood that the babies were under the age of one and their bodies were placed inside two 30 cm tall glass containers filled with an unknown liquid covered by red lids, with a white cloth placed over the top.
Police said they received a report from the janitor around 10 am on Friday, who found the bodies while he was cleaning the 400-square-foot flat at Block C of Mei Hang Building on Kai Man Path in Tuen Mun, as instructed by the landlord.
Forensic scientists were soon called to the scene and found no apparent injuries on the bodies after a preliminary examination. The cause of death and exact timing will have to be confirmed after an autopsy.
The case was then passed to the New Territories North regional crime squad and officers soon arrested the 24-year-old father surnamed Lam and the 22-year-old mother surnamed Chow in Yau Ma Tei the same day.
Lam was reportedly a warehouse worker and had an affiliation with triad society, while Chow was a PR officer. They were a couple who rented the flat together. As to their motive, a police investigation is underway.
It is understood that they started renting the Tuen Mun flat in late December 2022 but the landlord had not received their rent for about six months.
On Tuesday, the landlord and staffers from the property agency came and asked the pair to leave. The couple then signed the relevant documents to terminate their tenancy and moved out. The landlord then arranged for the janitor to come and clean the flat, who then discovered the case.
