Hong Kong Island police recorded 3,100 traffic accidents involving injuries last year, 17 pc increase

Hong Kong Island Regional Headquarters revealed on Friday that there was a 17 percent increase in traffic accidents causing injury in 2023, while there was also a 1 percent increase in traffic accidents causing death and serious injuries.

Hong Kong Island Regional Headquarters, along with the Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol of the Hong Kong Island and Outlying Islands branch, held a promotional event on the seventh day of the Lunar New Year in order to promote road safety.

They, along with various district councilors, visited various locations within the Hong Kong Islands in order to wish the citizens a happy Lunar New Year, give out souvenirs and promote road safety.

During the event, there were also lion dance performances in order to bring luck and happiness to the locals, which also attracted many of them to take photos.

According to the numbers from the Police Traffic Unit, there were around 3,100 cases of traffic accidents that involved a person getting injured in 2023, which saw a 17 percent increase compared to 2022.

While 316 accidents causing severe injuries and deaths were recorded in 2023, a 1 percent increase compared to 2022.

The police stated that the majority of the accidents were caused by the carelessness of motorists, as well as pedestrians not adhering to traffic signals, and carelessly crossing the roads.

Officers from the Hong Kong Island Regional Headquarters made use of the Lunar New Year period and held themed promotional events to hand out souvenirs to citizens while promoting road safety awareness.
