Two dragon babies were born at the stroke of midnight as Hong Kong entered the Year of the Dragon on Sunday. Public hospitals also saw three babies born shortly after midnight.
The first baby is Miles, weighing 3.1 kg, at the CUHK Medical Centre in Sha Tin. He has a sister, and the due date was expected to be February 17.
The father Chan, a merchant, said he and his wife didn’t mind if Miles was born in the Year of the Rabbit or the Year of the Dragon. He just thinks it is a good omen that Miles was born on the first day of the Lunar New Year.
Mrs Chan, a teacher at an international kindergarten, said giving birth to Miles was relatively easier and smoother compared to their first-born daughter. She is also thrilled that her son was born as the city entered the Lunar New Year.
The father hopes his son can grow up healthily and happily. He also thanked the medical team as well as the government for the HK$20,000 lai-see.
Another dragon baby is the first girl for the Fu family. Weighing 3.21 kg, she was also born at midnight at St. Teresa's Hospital in Kowloon City.
The father said the baby was expected to be born a few days later than the due date but was still surprised that she was born exactly on the first day of the Lunar New Year.
They have yet to name their baby girl and Chan also hopes she can grow up healthily and happily. They also thanked the medical team for their effort.
A girl and a boy were born at Eastern Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital, at 12.02 am and 12.03 am. They weigh 2.9 kg and 3.03 kg respectively.
At Hong Kong Adventist Hospital, a girl was born at 12.33 am while Tuen Mun Hospital also welcomed a baby boy weighing 2.7 kg at 12.44 am.
