A 38-year-old man was arrested by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) on Monday after reposting a post on social media that incited others to boycott the upcoming district council election.
The arrestee, an analyst programmer, was accused of breaching the Elections (Corrupt and Illegal Conduct) Ordinance by “inciting another person not to vote, or to cast invalid vote, by activity in public during election period”.
Upon conviction, the offense warrants a maximum penalty of three years’ imprisonment and a fine of HK$200,000.
The arrestee is detained for investigation and ICAC does not rule out further law enforcement actions.
