Applications for international driving permits now available online

Application for the International Driving Permit is now available online, with successful applicants to receive the permit within ten working days.

?The Transport Department on Tuesday said they have launched an online application service for the International Driving Permit from today to bring convenience to the public.

Users of the “iAM Smart+” mobile app or eligible applicants holding a valid personal digital certificate may complete the application entirely online via the GovHK website.

Those who successfully applied will usually be sent the permit by registered post within ten working days if the submitted documents and photos are in order. 

Members of the public who plan to drive outside Hong Kong are advised to allow sufficient time for the applications to be processed, the department said.

The department added that members of the public may continue to submit applications through existing methods, which are to visit the Licensing Offices in person, or send by post or via the drop-in boxes placed at the Licensing Offices.

“As the International Driving Permit processed online will have information printed on an entire sticker, the layout of the information will be slightly different from the International Driving Permit currently issued for applications submitted through other channels,” said a department spokesman.

“Nevertheless, both carry the Transport Department’s stamp and are valid International Driving Permits.”
