A 50-year-old worker had his right forearm amputated as an escalator in Tseung Kwan O Hospital suddenly started during maintenance work on Saturday afternoon.
The escalator is located in the Main Block of the hospital, connecting the ground floor and the lower ground floor.
A spokesman for the hospital said the contract worker was rushed to the Accident and Emergency Department and the hospital immediately arranged an emergency surgery for him.
Blood stains could be seen at the scene and the area was cordoned off by the hospital. Police officers also arrived at the scene to investigate.
The hospital said it immediately reported to the Police and the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD).
The hospital expressed deep sympathy to the patient and said it will strive to provide appropriate treatment to him. The hospital also said it will fully cooperate with police, EMSD and the Labor Department to investigate the incident.
The case was reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office as well.
