New People's Party (NPP) lawmaker and Legislative Council (LegCo) Supervisory Committee member Judy Chan Ka-pui apologized Saturday for driving against oncoming traffic on Wan Chai's Jaffe Road Friday while fire engines with flashing lights approached ahead, as shown in a viral video.
Chan told a radio program she made a hasty, careless decision due to urgency, expressed regret to the public, accepted potential legal consequences, voluntarily contacted police, gave a statement at the station this afternoon, and pledged to improve her driving by not driving short-term.
She posted on social media yesterday admitting she ignored road rules, made a wrong judgement, and promised serious reflection and strict future compliance.
LegCo President and Supervisory Committee Chairwoman Starry Lee Wai-king said through her secretariat that she noted Chan's public apology and police cooperation.
Per LegCo Members' Code of Conduct section 5.13, the committee will not consider, investigate or comment until law enforcement or legal proceedings conclude.
Island District traffic police confirmed following up on the online clip.
