From Hong Kong to the top universities worldwide
Delia School of Canada (DSC), founded in 1986, is the first Canadian international private school in Hong Kong registered with the Ontario Ministry of Education, Canada. One of the oldest international schools in Hong Kong, DSC offers students an excellent, transformative Canadian education. DSC graduates obtain the Ontario Secondary School Diploma, which allows them to directly apply for top universities in Canada. At the same time, graduates can also choose to progress to high-ranking universities around the world.
An internationally recognized curriculum
DSC is authorized to award the Ontario Secondary School Diploma, equivalent to the diploma issued in Ontario, Canada, in Hong Kong. Challenging and rigorous, the Canadian program is similar to the IB (International Baccalaureate) in that both boast an international vision focusing on nurturing students’ creativity and independent thinking, all the while encouraging them to actively explore and inquire. Teachers of both programs attach great importance to each student’s learning progress and strengths.
Yet, unlike the IB, students taking the Canadian program are not required to take public exams, as their subject teachers will directly grade their performances. Aside from reducing stress, this arrangement allows teachers to give advice in advance to different students based on their performance, thereby propelling them for further improvement. It also helps lower the negative impact of the current pandemic on further studies.
Focus on students' interests and goals
On top of core subjects, the Ontario Secondary School Diploma offers a wide range of elective subjects for students to choose following their personal interests and goals. For instance, if a student aims to study business in university, he can choose related courses during his diploma years to pave the way for university study.
Another strength of the Canadian education curriculum is that it is similar to that of the university system. In each semester, students need only to focus on four subjects, and there is no need to spend a year studying multiple subjects at the same time – which means students can effectively allocate time in their study. Compared to the IB, the Canadian education system allows students the flexibility to apply for courses according to their wish.
Teaching excellence
All Canadian registered schools are required to have 80 percent of their teachers registered in Canada. At DSC, more than 90 percent of the teachers are Canadian teachers registered with the Ontario College of Teachers, the official organization that licenses, governs and regulates Ontario’s teaching profession in the public interest.
With an average of 8-plus years of teaching experience at DSC, all the teachers are equipped with the skills and knowledge to provide students with a real Canadian learning experience. Students can learn in an authentic English environment, and experience firsthand the Canadian life and school culture.
Pathways to the top universities worldwide
DSC is an officially registered school of the Ministry of Education of Ontario, Canada. Graduates can, thus, obtain the internationally recognized Canadian Secondary School Diploma, allowing them to directly apply for all Canadian universities. They can also choose to enter high-ranking universities around the world.
DSC graduates have received acceptances from the Top 50 Universities across the world, including the University of California, Los Angeles, New York University, and Columbia University in the US; the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia in Canada; London School of Economics and the University of Edinburgh in the UK; as well as world-renowned universities in Asia including the University of Tokyo, Waseda University, the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Tsinghua University. The guidance counsellors at DSC are committed to supporting the students in choosing and applying for the universities of their choice, with university application workshops and seminars held regularly to provide well-rounded support for parents and students throughout the decision-making process.
Excellence in Business, Math, and Science
DSC students achieve outstanding results in the subjects of business, mathematics and science, and the variety of elective subjects also provide students with abundant choices to pursue the subjects of their interests. These range from business subjects like Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Marketing, International Business, to science and mathematics specialties such as Earth and Space, and Data Management.
Aside from academics, DSC students attain brilliant results in many international business and math competitions. Notably, the school has taken top awards in the Asian Youth Social Entrepreneurship Association for 3 times in 4 years; as well as the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, which celebrates and recognizes young people’s achievements outside of academia.
Multicultural and international community
DSC currently accommodates students from over 45 nationalities. The multicultural environment is not only ideal for students to learn and use English on a daily basis, but it also allows them to learn about different cultures and cultivate them to become a global citizen for a bright and prosperous future.
DSC offers three International Language options: French, Japanese, and Putonghua. While the French option follows the Ontario curriculum, both Japanese and Putonghua are in line with the national curriculum in Japan and China respectively. Putonghua classes are segregated into the first and second language levels to support students with all language proficiency and learning needs.
Through-train school system
As a through-train school, DSC offers a through-train program for students aged from 4 to 18 years. Starting from Early Years to Grade 12, the seamless learning journey ensures a well-rounded development in both academic and personal areas. Aside from cultivating a high sense of belonging among the students, the teachers also provide learning support and assistance according to each student’s individual progress throughout the coherent curriculum.
All-encompassing education
Over 40 different types of extracurricular activities are on offer at DSC, as a member of ISSFHK and HKSSF, DSC also has over 40 teams competing regionally in 12 different sports. As for arts, students can choose to pursue everything from visual arts, dance, drama to music. STEAM Education is, on the other hand, fully integrated into the school’s curriculum, with a team of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) educational specialists dedicated to promoting innovation and technology in all subjects.
To ensure that learning extends beyond the classroom, DSC offers Experiential Learning Programs, which takes place in Hong Kong as well as international destinations like Canada, Japan and the UK. With themes ranging from Leadership Skills, Adventure and Sports, to Community Service, the programs seek to enhance skill and competencies instrumental for students to thrive in the 21st century.
Testimonials
Niharika Singh (Class of 2019 – University College London)
“What stood out the most to me about DSC through the twelve years I’ve been here has been the environment. It was an environment of constant growth, progress, and flexibility. It wasn’t just the students that tried to be better with each passing grade, but it was also the teachers. The teachers do all they can to address the needs of each individual and accommodate the learning styles of every new class. Textbooks and databases can prescribe basics, but it is the teachers that ensured I could understand class content deep enough to critically answer the hard questions related to it.”
Patrick Ma (Class of 2020 – University of British Columbia)
“What made DSC so different from other international schools in Hong Kong is the dedicated teaching team. All the teachers are so passionate about what they teach and it motivated me a lot. No matter what the course is, even if they are courses I have little interest in, the teachers made me want to learn more and my passion grew stronger in these subjects as well.”
Mrs Deplaedt (Parent of 4 students in DSC)
“Our four children have been attending DSC for the past 5 years. As parents, we know we made the right decision to place our kids at DSC. They have excellent growth personally and academically. What we like most about the school is the caring and dedicated teachers. Teachers at DSC genuinely want the kids to succeed – they go above and beyond to ensure the kids are developing in all areas of student life. We are always impressed with the high level of communication and guidance provided at the school. We would recommend DSC as it is truly a great school.”
