Wong Tai Sin district councillor wants CLP to bolster energy reliability after 4-hour outage

A Wong Tai Sin district councillor has urged electricity supplier CLP Power to come up with plans to bolster its energy reliability, after parts of Wong Tai Sin plunged into darkness for more than four hours on Wednesday night due to a power outage.

The blackout was reported at a number of residential buildings and shopping malls at around 8 pm, affecting Temple Mall North, Lower Wong Tai Sin Estate, Mei Tung Estate, and Lions Rise.

Power was eventually restored at around 12.11 am after the electricity supplier conducted an emergency repair of a faulty cable that led to the outage.

District councillor Yeung Nok-hin said the lifts at the affected buildings were out of service during the outage, with residents required to wait on the ground floor for the power to be restored.

He also said care teams were deployed to conduct visits to make sure residents had what they needed during the outage.

In a statement, the government said it was very concerned about the outage. "Residents were trapped in lifts and might have had an uncomfortable night during this hot weather," it said.
