Passenger hospitalized in Yau Ma Tei knife attack; driver arrested for drug possession

A 26-year-old driver was arrested for drug possession as his car was intercepted by assailants in Yau Ma Tei in the early hours of Wednesday who slashed his 40-year-old friend onboard. The friend was later arrested as well for failing to produce an ID card. 

The attack occurred around 3 am when the driver, Choi, 26, was driving his friend, Leung, back home. 

As they reached Man Ying Street, Choi’s car was sandwiched by a seven-seater and a private car. Leung immediately got out of the car to flee the scene but was knifed by multiple assailants and then collapsed. 

The assailants soon boarded the private car and fled towards Ferry Street after the attack. Leung, sustaining a number of knife wounds to his body, remained conscious and was sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. 

Police later came and cordoned off the area. After a preliminary investigation, officers seized an ID card belonging to another person along with some “ice” and heroin in Choi’s car. Choi was then arrested for possessing dangerous drugs while Leung was also arrested for failing to produce his ID card. 

Officers also seized machetes and license plates from the seven-seater abandoned by the assailants. 

The case is now being handled by the Yau Tsim district crime investigation team and police are hunting down the six male assailants who were dressed all black at the time.
