Wong Tai Sin district officer named

The government announced Saturday that Assistant Director of Home Affairs Thomas Wu Kui-wah will assume the District Officer (Wong Tai Sin) post on Sunday (Sept 3), succeeding Steve Wong Chi-wah.

Wu joined the administrative service in 2002. He has served in the Security Bureau, the then Education and Manpower Bureau, the Education Bureau, the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, the then Food and Health Bureau and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Tokyo.

Departing Wong Chi-wah was given a lavish farewell banquet treat last month before his setting out to Beijing for a year of training in public administration, which led to former chief executive Leung Chun-ying lashing out the "over-the-top and wasteful" banquet.

Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu also said the banquet has created a negative impression despite positive intentions, and he will fine-tune a system for officials attending public events as he acknowledged criticism of the banquet that cost well-wishers HK$200,000.
