A 21-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly inciting others to join an unlawful assembly in Mong Kok last Sunday through a social media group.

Police said the woman was an admin of a protest group on Telegram.

Fan Chun-yip, chief inspector of the force’s cyber security and technology crime bureau, some people have been using various social media channels to spread misinformation, incite others to break the law and provoke hatred on officers and the government since the social unrest started in June last year.

The suspect was detained in Sha Tin yesterday for sending out messages that incite people to join an unauthorized protest in the Kowloon district on September 6, and even encouraged others to attack officers, damage police stations and police vehicles.

Officers seized a mobile phone, two computers and a network-attached storage device at the suspect’s home.

Fan said investigations were underway, and more people could be arrested.
