Hongkongers can now use WeChat Pay HK on public transport in 15 mainland cities, notably Shenzhen and Shanghai.
By using the WeChat mini-program Ride Code, passengers can pay for metro and bus rides.
Eight cities - the others being Guangzhou, Foshan, Chongqing, Wuhan, Kunming and Hefei - support the use of Tencent's Ride Code, while the other seven only support the mini-program launched by local subway or buses.
The procedures are similar.
Users first open WeChat's mini-programs, select the city they are in, and then input their Hong Kong phone number and mainland travel permit for verification.
The code can then be available for use on buses and trains.
The fare will be automatically converted to Hong Kong dollars at the best rate, with no extra fee.
