Internet sees red over Pony Ma's satorial choice

A viral video clip of Tencent's (0700) chairman Pony Ma Hauteng wearing a red sweatshirt worth less than 80 yuan (HK$88.52) has drawn the internet's ire with people saying the tycoon is degrading himself by wearing cheap clothes.

Ma, who wore the sweatshirt, sang the Cantonese song Blessing You at the group's annual party in the Shenzhen Bay Sports Centre on Monday.

A similar sweatshirt sold for between 79.99 and 158 yuan on e-commerce platforms.

Within 24 hours after the party, more than 200 people had placed orders for the top.

Reviews have been not good, with buyers claiming theirs shrunk after a wash.

At the party, Ma said Tencent's video business had beaten expectations and its games had great potential overseas.

He said Tencent Cloud will focus on the development of artificial intelligence and big models, adding it has kept up with the first array of AI though it is not at the forefront.

Tencent has invested in the research and development of AI-related areas and is not in a hurry to complete it early.

According to Bloomberg, Ma is worth US$32.7 billion (HK$255.06 billion) and is the world's 44th richest and China's fourth richest person.
