The Wai mall to host 150 merchants

The MTR Corporation (0066) has revealed that the shopping mall atop Sha Tin's Tai Wai Station - an interchange facility on the East Rail and Tuen Ma lines - will be named The Wai.

It will cover nearly 650,000 square feet on four retail floors and is scheduled to open in 2023. It is seen as good for hosting more than 150 merchants.

The corporation expects to have an occupation permit next year, so the mall will be open for letting at the end of this year or the beginning of 2022.

The mall will have the largest indoor bicycle parking lot in Hong Kong - about 13,000 square feet. That will be good for about 330 bike parking spaces. The indoor parking lot also offers about 390 spaces for parking cars and 39 for motorbikes.

There is over 80,000 square feet of green recreational space on the second, third and fourth floors. The main atrium on the second floor of the mall also has nearly 5,000 square feet of dedicated event space.

The Wai has an elevator link to residential buildings, and a footbridge connects the main residential area and tourist attractions in the district. The MTRC expects retail sales of its shopping malls to be better in the second half of this year amid Hong Kong's economic recovery.
