Robbers in $6m smash-and-grab watch haul

Police are hunting for four individuals of south Asian descent in connection with a brazen robbery at Legend Success Timepiece store in Causeway Bay yesterday.

Three of them, masked and armed with a sledgehammer and knives, stormed into the Po Ming Building store on Foo Ming Street at

2 pm and made off with 30 luxury watches worth around HK$6 million. No injuries were reported.

Witnesses reported hearing the sound of display cases being hammered three times. They fled in a Honda car driven by the getaway driver in the direction of Canal Road Flyover.

A nearby store was forced to close temporarily to ensure staff and customer safety, with an employee saying it had a dozen customers at the time.

Chief inspector Lo Ka-chun of Hong Kong Island regional crime unit said the robbery took a mere two minutes.

A passer-by managed to photograph the getaway car with his mobile phone, so officers know what sort of a make it is.

A female employee from a dried fruit store across the street said one of the suspects, dressed in black attire, smashed the display cases with what is believed to be a sledgehammer.

She said the three robbers fled toward Percival Street and escaped in a car headed for Leighton Road.

There were seven customers in her store at the time.
