Maritime and port masterplan in works

Hong Kong will develop into a leading international maritime center with the government about to publish a detailed action plan on maritime and port development strategy in the coming weeks, said Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of Hong Kong Maritime Week and the 3rd World Maritime Merchants Forum at the Convention and Exhibition Centre yesterday, he said the plan "will enhance high-end maritime services, facilitate transformation toward zero emissions, promote smart and digital initiatives in the industry, and promote global exchanges."

He said Hong Kong, with the top 10 busiest container ports globally, has strong international connectivity, speedy customs clearance and high workflow efficiency.

"With over 240 weekly international container vessel sailings, we provide extensive connections to over 460 destinations worldwide," Lee said, adding that the city is home to over 1,100 port and maritime companies.

Lee also said the industry played an important role in the economy, contributing 4.1 percent, or over HK$110 billion, to gross domestic product and 2.1 percent to total employment, creating 78,000 jobs.

He said Hong Kong will enhance cooperation with Greater Bay Area cities on logistics, strengthen ties with cities on the west bank of the Pearl River, and facilitate efficient cargo transhipments via Hong Kong by leveraging on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.

"We will actively advocate the use and supply of new energy in sea, land and air transport," Lee said. "We will soon kick start a feasibility study on providing green methanol bunkering, for both local and ocean-going vessels."

Secretary for Transport and Logistics Lam Sai-hung said the authorities are also working on smart ports.

Central government liaison office director Zheng Yanxiong said unity and cooperation among countries, China's opening up and Hong Kong's stability are all important factors behind the development of the maritime industry.

Around 900 officials, merchants and industry representatives will join 50 forums, thematic visits and conferences in the seven-day-long event , which ends on Saturday.
