Building Academic Excellence through Wellbeing at YCA

At YMCA Christian Academy, the core of education is not just academic achievement, but the child's social development and physical and mental health. We believe no two children are exactly alike and do not expect every child to shine with the same brightness in the same field. Through our well-rounded and wellbeing oriented curriculum, we equip students with the ability to measure their own wellbeing. “Children who can understand and manage their emotions are more likely to express themselves calmly and in an appropriate way,” says Mr. Blaik. Wellbeing-focused teaching aims to help students understand themselves as learners and to develop self-awareness and personal, social and emotional skills. Our students are able to identify their emotions and use strategies to help them regulate and solve problems together.

We also believe in developing agency. Following the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and UK National Curriculum, students engage in thematic and creative units that provide a structured learning process along with specific educational objectives for each subject. These units are designed to capture students' interest and foster learner agency, equipping them with the skills to take charge of their own educational journey. Students learn how to be agents, taking ownership of their learning and development, maintaining a curious and reflective posture. We focus on the development of the whole child so that every student will grow and thrive academically, physically, spiritually, and socially. For this to happen, we maintain a nurturing learning environment and offer a range of support for students’ wellbeing and pastoral care.
