“Crash-for-compensation” syndicates often conspire with unethical doctors and lawyers to inflate claims, but insurance firms rigorously verify amounts, and police should investigate suspected fraud.
Insurance consultant Paul Law Siu-hung advises drivers in accidents to immediately report to the police and notify their insurer. Even if a claim arrives long after a minor or non-collision incident, inform the company promptly.
He noted exaggerated demands frequently come via law firms, but insurers counter with their own lawyers to check reasonableness.
One case claimed whiplash from braking 50 meters away, which he called implausible.
Such scams involving rogue drivers and lawyers have long existed; insurers actively probe suspicious cases and expose fraud to protect genuine victims.
