Emperor Cinemas has announced the unexpected closure of its Ma On Shan branch, located at Sunshine City Plaza, with operations ceasing on Monday.
According to the cinema’s Facebook post, all movie vouchers, complimentary tickets, and coupons issued by the branch will remain valid at its eight other Emperor Cinemas locations in Hong Kong within their respective validity periods.
All movie premiums that were registered online for pickup at the branch can be redeemed at Emperor Cinemas Plus+ at Tai Wai starting from January 19.
“We invite you to continue your movie journey with us at our other locations across Hong Kong, Kowloon, the New Territories, and Macau,” the cinema stated.
In a Facebook group, Ma On Shan residents also expressed surprise at the closure, noting that they would now have to visit the Tai Wai branch in Sha Tin to watch movies after the shutdown, and hoping other theater chains might step in.
Some residents also expressed confusion, recalling that the cinema used to be quite crowded. However, others pointed out that the two cinemas at The Wai and Sunshine City Plaza may have been competing for the same audience.
