Residents of a Sha Tin housing estate have raised nearly seven figures in donations for the family of a security guard who died in the Wang Fuk Court five-alarm fire in Tai Po.
The property management office for City One Shatin confirmed night-shift security guard Tang Tat-yee from Block 33 was among the victims of the blaze that has claimed over 100 lives, leaving behind a wife and school-aged daughter.
After the news spread, residents flooded the building's lobby donation box, requiring management to relocate it to a security control room near Block 41 to accommodate continued contributions.
The estate's Facebook group shared a management notice stating that on December 4 morning, representatives from the estate committee, management office and security company witnessed the donation counting before funds were transferred to Tang's family, wishing "the deceased rest in peace and the living stay strong."
