Hong Kong’s iconic tram will increase fares starting Monday, with adult tickets rising from HK$3 to HK$3.3 and from HK$1.5 to HK$1.6 for children aged three to 11 and senior citizens.
However, the price for monthly passes will stay the same at HK$260.
The government justified the fare adjustments by citing Hong Kong Tramways' current financial situation and future fiscal projections, stating that the fare hikes are necessary to ensure sustainable operations.
It added that the fare increase is within an acceptable range, and trams will continue to be the most affordable mode of transport along Hong Kong Island's northern coast following the hike.
The tram company emphasized that this adjustment will help ensure the sustainable operation and development of tram services, which currently carry up to 150,000 passengers daily.
