The observatory has warned people to brace for a drop in temperature, saying the mercury is expected to dip to around 15 degrees on Thursday as a cold front approaches.
The chilly weather is expected to affect Hong Kong starting tomorrow, with the weatherman expecting a low of 17 and 16 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday. The mercury will dip further to 15 degrees on Thursday and Friday. It will be even cooler in the New Territories.
The head of the Hong Kong Senior Citizens Home Safety Association, Maura Wong Hung-hung, reminded elderly people to wrap up warm and seek help if necessary.
She said last winter’s figures indicate a 10 percent increase in cases seeking help from the Personal Emergency Link, commonly known as the 'ping on bell', when compared to the annual average.
Among these cases, there has been a rise in incidents related to falls, attributed to increased outdoor activities by the elderly post-pandemic.
Meanwhile, Wong said elderly individuals have reduced thermoregulatory functions, making them more susceptible to the effects of cold weather. It also increases the risk of hypothermia or cardiovascular diseases.
She advised seniors to pay attention to safety at home and outdoors, avoid risky activities such as reaching for high objects or lifting heavy items, and refrain from walking at a fast pace. They should also ensure warmth by wearing light and comfortable clothing.
Engaging in mild outdoor activities during favorable weather conditions can help maintain flexibility, she said, calling on members of the public to care more for the elderly population.
