'D' license plate fetches $20.2m in auction

A personalized car plate with the single-letter "D" sold for HK$20.2 million at a Transport Department auction, making it the third most expensive license plate in the city.

The auction on Sunday featured 49 personalized car plates, with the "D" plate bagged by a woman for HK$20.2 million after around 70 bids.

It was the third priciest license plate sold, with the "W" plate going for HK$26 million after 119 bids in March 2021, and the "R" plate sold for HK$25.5 million in February last year.

Other license plates – including "AA 8888" and "XX 1888" - were sold for HK$560,000 and HK$98,000 in today's auction, respectively.
