Man arrested after punching a cop who was jogging in Kai Tak

A man suspected to be mentally disordered was arrested after he attacked a police officer who was jogging underneath a pedestrian footbridge in Kai Tak on Wednesday afternoon. 

It is understood that the cop is Thomas Yu Wai-leung, senior superintendent from Traffic Kowloon East. 

The incident occurred around 1 pm. Sources said Yu was jogging during his lunch hour and ran past the man when he reached underneath the footbridge on Prince Edward Road East towards Rhythm Garden. 

The two didn’t have any physical or eye contact but the man suddenly started throwing punches at Yu. He then fled along Concorde Road towards Kowloon Bay. Yu filed a police report and tailed the attacker and a traffic cop nearby also got off his motorcycle to offer assistance. 

The man was later subdued and arrested some 200 meters away from the scene. It was understood that the man kept talking to himself and was suspected to be mentally ill. 

Yu sustained injuries to his nose and eyebrow. He and the attacker were both sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.
