Workers uncovering a suspected wartime explosive on the third runway project at Hong Kong International Airport triggered an emergency response Saturday morning, leading to a controlled detonation hours later with no impact on flights.
The 30-centimeter by 7-centimeter object was spotted shortly before noon by construction crews near the future T2 passenger concourse on Chek Lap Kok.
Site personnel immediately evacuated the area and alerted police, who dispatched bomb disposal experts.
After assessing the device as a likely relic from World War II, officers carried out a safe explosion around 4.20pm and reopened the zone shortly afterward.
Airport authorities followed police guidance by temporarily cordoning off the immediate vicinity while the operation unfolded. They emphasized that the discovery caused no disruptions to regular airport operations or passenger services.
