Man jumps to death after suspectedly setting Tuen Mun home on fire

A 64-year-old man jumped to his death after a fire broke out from his home in Kin Sang Estate in Tuen Mun on Thursday morning, with police finding a suicide note at the scene. 

Police said they received a report from a security guard around 7.34 am that there was a fire in a unit at Hong Sang House. 

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find the door locked. It is understood that the male tenant surnamed Chu was sitting by the balcony with a knife, and refusing to open the door. 

Firefighters then broke into the unit, only to find that Chu had jumped off the balcony, landing on the ground after hitting a tree. 

Chu was rushed to Tuen Mun Hospital but was eventually pronounced dead. 

Firefighters also put out the couch that was on fire and police later found a suicide note at the unit. Officers also found the knife which was broken in half and the edge stained with blood. 

After a preliminary investigation, police believe Chu committed suicide because he was unhappy about some life problems. 

The case is now being handled by the Tuen Mun district crime squad.
