Police nabbed five cabbies in a three-day operation during the Hong Kong Sevens that targeted drivers who engaged in bad practices such as overcharging passengers or refusing hire.
Police said 50 occupied taxis were flagged down by officers at roadblocks in Tsim Sha Tsui during the operation. Officers investigated whether the drivers had engaged in illegal practices.
The officers also issued summons to five of the drivers for failing to display their identity plates in a holder.
The police force reminded members of the public that, under the Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) Regulations, taxi drivers who overcharge, refuse hire, or solicit business are subject to a fine of up to HK$10,000 and a prison sentence of up to six months upon conviction.
Citizens should report to the police should they suspect any illegal acts, the force added.
