The discovery came after the “weird” shape of her chest was flagged by Futian Port Passenger Inspection officers, and after getting her to remove her top, they discovered the lizards underneath, which were placed inside five small bags.
The woman was caught as she tried to enter Shenzhen from the crossing that connects to Hong Kong.
All 16 lizards were later identified as Hydrosaurus weberi, an agamid lizard native to Indonesia.
According to China's customs regulations, animals from abroad must be declared prior to entry, and undergo a period of quarantine afterward.
Furthermore, had they gotten into Shenzhen, they could have been traded without authorization of the Chinese central government because of the city's Special Economic Zone status.
The lizards have now been handed over to zoo officials for safekeeping.
