Japanese supermarket AEON announced on Saturday that its Wednesday discount “Super Day” will be temporarily canceled due to the severe development of the pandemic.
Earlier, long lines were spotted outside the branches on the discount day in Tseung Kwan O, Tsuen Wan, Taikoo Shing and Lai Chi Kok, while the inside was flooded with crowds fighting over items on the shelves over the mixed messages of a possible full-scale lockdown.
The situation soon drew the attention of the public as people worried that Covid-19 is more likely to be transmitted in such a packed environment.
Some also called on the supermarket chain to cancel the “Super Day” temporarily which attracted even more people than the flower markets did.
In its Facebook post published Saturday, AEON didn't spell out when the “Super Day” will return and added that they will continue to step up cleaning and disinfection work, wishing all customers good health.
