Most staff resign, Apple Daily to cease operations on Wednesday: sources

Most staffers of Apple Daily have resigned already, and the paper and its online news platform is expected to cease operations as soon as Wednesday, according to sources. 

Although feeling frustrated, some staffers said they will complete their works in the last few days. At night some staffers were also spotted packing up their things and leaving the office of Next Digital. 

Mark Simon, assistant to the media tycoon Jimmy Lai Chi-ying, said in an interview that Apple Daily is forced to shutter within a few days, after the government froze the assets of Next Digital. 

A spokesperson of Security Bureau said endangering national security is a serious crime and the bureau will take action that target at criminal offenses. The bureau will also freeze assets relevant to the offenses when necessary and according to law. 

Regarding the application of releasing assets, the spokesperson said secretary for security John Lee Ka-chiu will handle in accordance with law. 

The spokesperson added that the case is now in legal procedures and the bureau will not make further comments. 

Earlier sources said update for Apple Daily's website will stop at 11.59pm on Friday and the last publication of the paper will come on Saturday, if the assets remain frozen and the company no longer have funds to run the businesses.
