Police commissioner Chris Tang Ping-keung slammed the exiled to have raised money through crowd funding and incited youngsters to break the law after which they flee overseas with their families.
Without naming former lawmaker and Democrat Ted Hui Chi-fung, Tang said there will be investigation into additional crimes than the offenses he was charged with, such as whether they broke the law by crowd funding.
His comment came after Hui, who earlier announced he is going into exile and is now in England, told media that at least five bank accounts belonging to him and his family members were frozen, which he said contained their lifelong savings of several millions Hong Kong dollars.
Speaking on a TV program yesterday, Tang, without naming Hui, said the Central and Western district councillor should feel ashamed of his abscondence.
Tang said Hui told the court that he was travelling abroad for meetings but in fact, he fled.
“I think it really depends on your own conscience. If you have no conscience and abscond, and you don’t want to bear your responsibility, even said you were being persecuted, these are all excuses,” he said.
Tang said many youngsters who got incited, have been sentenced in jail for rioting or throwing petrol bombs, but Hui used “beautiful excuses” and absconded.
Such behaviour disgraced Hui himself, his family and young people, and he should be ashamed of it, Tang said.
