Executive Council convenor Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee said she overcame her antisocial personality by hosting events when she was a social secretary.
In an online media interview, Ip said when she first joined the government as an administrative officer in the 1970s she was criticized by her boss for being socially inept.
Having a tough personality, she strived to improve and became the social secretary of the Administrative Service Association and held social activities for the association, including boat tours and dinner gatherings.
Ip also received many sarcastic comments on her bids for chief executive in 2012 and 2017. Someone even once asked what she would do if she lost.
"Just go to work! I am a lawmaker and don't have to resign to run. If I can't get enough nominations, I can still report to duty the next day," she said. She joked she hoped her good genes of hard work and endurance will be passed on to the next generation and advised young people to work on overcoming their weaknesses.
