Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan Kwok-ki stressed the importance of adapting patriotic education in Hong Kong to local conditions while still drawing inspiration from the central government's patriotic education law.
He said there is need for a more gentle approach to guide young people toward understanding and loving their country, rather than imposing it upon them through legislation.
"Patriotism is not only about memorizing relevant knowledge. Our ultimate goal is to let young people recognize their country emotionally. They will then be proud of the country and want to protect it," Chan said.
To foster this, Chan suggested that schools organize a range of activities and events, such as movie screenings, sports competitions, as well as visits to China to learn about its recent advancements in space science and technology.
While Hong Kong will refer to the mainland's patriotic education law, he added that there is a need for adjustments that align with Hong Kong's unique circumstances. He stated that patriotism does not imply an absence of government criticism and highlighted the government's openness to constructive feedback.
Chan also said that effective and constructive suggestions are welcome and considered acts of patriotism as they contribute to the SAR's improvement.
But he cautioned against criticisms aimed at overthrowing the government or engaging in subversive actions, as they fall outside the scope of patriotism and are deemed unacceptable.
In commemoration of China's 75th founding anniversary, the SAR government plans to launch a patriotic activity this year. Through a series of engaging events, the government aims to raise citizens' awareness of patriotism and foster a stronger sense of national identity among the population.
