The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year with a series of high-profile events, including a large June party with former chairmen, roaming design buses, and a special tram parade to showcase Hong Kong's creative and economic achievements.
The HKTDC, founded in 1966, reaches its diamond jubilee in a year that also sees several other Hong Kong institutions mark 60 years.
Over six decades, the council has supported the city's economic evolution—from promoting light industry exports in its early days to aiding manufacturers moving north after mainland China's 1978 opening-up and later shifting focus to services and finance with initiatives like the Asian Financial Forum as Hong Kong became an international financial center.
Today, the HKTDC helps Hong Kong and mainland enterprises expand overseas amid China's new development phase and companies' "going global" efforts.
The organization has adapted through every major challenge Hong Kong has faced, including riots, crises, political transitions, and pandemics, contributing to the city's repeated successful transformations.
For the 60th anniversary, HKTDC chairman Frederick Ma Si-hang stated that the key highlights include a major party in June featuring dialogues with past chairmen and former senior executives sharing experiences and future visions.
The council will also launch two mobile buses filled with products from the HKTDC Design Gallery, touring districts so the public can view and buy quality local designs.
A decorated tram parade will celebrate the milestone across the city, alongside other community activities.
The anniversary events aim to engage the public, highlight Hong Kong's design excellence, and reflect on the HKTDC's role in the city's economic resilience and growth.
